چکیده

Introduction The problem of atherosclerosis is one of great complexity. Clinically we are concerned with an end result arterial obstruction which is the resultant of a multitude of precursor mechanisms, some external, some internal, many of them interdependent and interacting. We may start with our particular area of study, but if we follow it through, it will often become confluent with others starting elsewhere. Even when all the mechanisms are identified it will require computer techniques to describe the interplay of all the variables. In the face of this ‘multifactorial’ complexity the clinician may lose heart, but should not, for it is likely that these many ‘causes’ converge and produce their ‘effect’ by way of only a few final pathways. We should certainly continue to try to identify and correct main causal mechanisms, but we can also hope to prevent or modify the disease by manipulation of the final pathways.

Changes in plasma nitric oxide metabolites concentration during glucose tolerance test in type 2 diabetic rats

Introduction: Repeated hyperglycemia play an important role in the development of atherosclerosis in diabetic patients. Endothelium is the organ of the first-line defense against atherosclerosis and nitric oxide has a major role in this task. The aim of this study was to determine changes in plasma nitric oxide metabolites concentration during glucose tolerance test in type 2 diabetic rats. Me...

Hyperinsulinemia does not change atherosclerosis development in apolipoprotein E null mice.

OBJECTIVE To determine the contribution of hyperinsulinemia to atherosclerosis development. METHODS AND RESULTS Apolipoprotein E (Apoe) null mice that had knockout of a single allele of the insulin receptor (Insr) gene were compared with littermate Apoe null mice with intact insulin receptors. Plasma insulin levels in Insr haploinsufficient/Apoe null mice were 50% higher in the fasting state ...

Positive Correlation of Resistin with Blood Lipids in Gestational Diabetes

Background &Objective: Resistin is an important adipokin, secreted from adipocytes and causes insulin resistance. Gestational diabetes (GDM) is characterized by insulin resistance in insulin target tissues. The goal of this research was to investigate whether there is a relationship among resistin and various clinical and metabolic parameters in GDM.Materials & Methods: 76 pregnant women who go...

Carbohydrate nutrition, glycaemic load, and plasma lipids: the Insulin Resistance Atherosclerosis Study.

AIMS We evaluated the relationship of carbohydrate nutrition and selected food groups with lipids using data from the Insulin Resistance Atherosclerosis Study (IRAS Exam I, 1992-1994). METHODS AND RESULTS A total of 1026 middle-aged adults with normal or impaired glucose tolerance had complete data on fasting lipids and usual dietary intake from an interviewer-administered, validated food fre...

Disialylated apolipoprotein C-III proteoform is associated with improved lipids in prediabetes and type 2 diabetes.

The apoC-III proteoform containing two sialic acid residues (apoC-III2) has different in vitro effects on lipid metabolism compared with asialylated (apoC-III0) or the most abundant monosialylated (apoC-III1) proteoforms. Cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between plasma apoC-III proteoforms (by mass spectrometric immunoassay) and plasma lipids were tested in two randomized clinical ...

Clustering of anthropometric parameters, glucose tolerance, and serum lipids in children with high and low beta- and pre-beta-lipoproteins. Bogalusa Heart Study.

Children initially aged 21/2 to 14 years living in Bogalusa, Louisiana (n = 2530) were examined twice, 3 years apart, for fasting serum pre-beta- and beta-lipoprotein cholesterol (beta-LPC) levels. Based on averages of these levels, the children were ranked for pre-beta- and beta-LPC in combinations of extreme quintiles (low-low, high-high) or quartiles (low-high, high-low), n = 388, and were r...
